Reflection: Choosing My Team and Project

For my WP Credits project, I decided to join the WordPress Photos Team. When I was younger, photography was not something I was especially interested in. Over time, however, I started taking pictures of landscapes and places that caught my attention. I liked the idea of showing other people a little of what I was seeing through my own eyes. Because of that, photography gradually became a hobby, although it is still something I have never explored seriously or professionally.

Why I chose the Photos Team

One of the main reasons I chose the Photos Team is that photography gives me a different experience from programming and spending time behind a computer.

Most of my academic and professional interests are related to technology, so I liked the idea of choosing a contribution that would allow me to step away from that environment for a moment and do something more visual and creative.

Another thing I liked about the Photos Team is the freedom of the contribution process. Other types of WordPress projects can require a more structured workflow, while photography gives contributors a lot of freedom to decide what they want to capture, as long as the photographs meet the technical, licensing, privacy, and quality requirements of the WordPress Photo Directory.

My contribution project

My project will consist of contributing original photographs to the WordPress Photo Directory.

The goal of the project is to have at least 30 original photographs accepted and published in the directory. The photographs will be submitted under the CC0 license and will need to follow the Photos Team guidelines.

My contribution process will include selecting photographs, checking that they meet the required dimensions and file specifications, preparing them for submission, writing appropriate alternative text, and submitting them for moderation.

Connection with my skills and interests

I do not have professional photography experience, so I cannot say that I am starting this project with advanced photography skills.

What I do have is the interest in capturing landscapes, objects, animals, and other things that catch my attention and sharing a little of what I see around me.

My knowledge of technology can also help me with some parts of the process, especially when working with image files, dimensions, formats, and the online submission platform.

I am also interested in web development, and photographs are an important visual resource on websites. This makes the project interesting to me because the photos I contribute could eventually be useful to people creating websites, blogs, or other digital content.

What I expect to learn

I do not expect this project to work like a formal photography course because the main objective is contributing to WordPress.

However, I expect the experience to help me understand more about what makes a photograph appropriate for a public image directory, including image quality, technical requirements, licensing, privacy, accessibility, and alternative text.

In the future, I would also like to explore photography more seriously and learn topics such as composition, lighting, and other techniques that could help me improve the photographs I take.

What I hope to accomplish

At the beginning, my main objective is simply to successfully complete the contribution requirement of having at least 30 photographs accepted.

As I progress, I would also like to focus on choosing the best photographs I can contribute instead of thinking only about the number required.

My final goal is to complete the WP Credits project while contributing images that can actually be useful to the WordPress community and freely reused by other people in their own projects.
